Run the Calculation

Starts the calculation for the current project.

Tip

Use Batch Run if you want to solve a set of projects in a prescribed order (see “Batch Run” for details).

Procedure

  1. Open the Run  dialog:
    • On the ribbon, click Tools > Flow Simulation > Solve > Run.

    • On the toolbars, click Run on the Flow Simulation Main toolbar.

    • In the menu, select Tools > Flow Simulation > Run.

    • In the Flow Simulation product tree, right-click the project name and select Run.

    • In the Flow Simulation analysis tree, right-click the project name and select Run.

    Note:

    If Run is disabled you may need to rebuild the project. To rebuild, click Tools > Flow Simulation > Project > Rebuild .

  2. Specify the Startup calculation options:
    • Mesh. Select this check box if you want to create the new computational mesh for a project that is already meshed or calculated. If the project was never meshed or calculated before, the Mesh check box is selected automatically.

      If you want to see the computational mesh before solver run, select only the Mesh check box and when the mesh is generated, load the *.cpt file (see “Load and Unload Results” for details).

    • Solve. Select this check box to calculate the project. For a project that was already calculated before you can also select one of the following options:

      • New calculation. Select this option to recalculate a previously calculated project from start, using the initial conditions specified in the Wizard or General Settings dialog. For a project that was never calculated before this option is selected by default when you select Solve.

      • Continue calculation. Select this option to continue calculation from the point where the solver was stopped automatically or manually. This option is available only for already calculated projects. Selecting this option automatically clears the Mesh option.

      • If you select the Take previous results option, the initial conditions specified in the Wizard or General Settings are ignored.

        For transient analysis (if the Time-dependent option is enabled on the Analysis type tab of the General Settings or Wizard dialog), you can also select a time instant in the Start from time moment list to use results obtained at the selected time moment as initial conditions. This setting does not affect the total analysis time specified in the Wizard or Calculation Control Options dialog.

    Tip

    If you intend to start the new calculation using previous calculation results as an initial condition, select the Mesh, Solve, New calculation, and Take previous results options.

  3. Then specify the Cores and memory usage options:
    • You can run the solver on another computer or as a separate process on the current computer. In the Run At list select the way to run the calculation:

      • This computer. The solver runs on the current computer as a separate process (i.e. as a separate application).

      • Add computer. Allows you to select a network computer to add to the Run At list. Once the computer is added, you may select it to calculate the project. This option allows you to use the other computer’s CPU and memory resources at the expense of additional calculation time due to data transfer through the network.

        Note:

        Any Flow Simulation installation is required on the network computer where you want to run the solver.

        See “Specify Computers for Network Solving” for details.

      • If you want Flow Simulation to be closed on the local computer after the solver starts on the network computer, select the Close CAD check box.

      • If you want SOLIDWORKS to be closed on the local computer after the solver starts on the network computer, select the Close CAD check box.

    • Use Core(s). If your computer or the selected network computer has multiprocessing capabilities, in the Use Core(s) list select the number of processors or processor cores to use for calculation. Please note that the number of available processors or cores depends on the operating system and may differ from a number of processors or cores actually installed on the computer.

  4. Specify the Results processing after finishing the calculation options:
    • If you want to automatically load results when the calculation is finished (or if you stop the calculation manually), select the Load results option.

    • For each Flow Simulation project of any currently open model you can define which goal plots, XY-plots, point parameters, surface parameters and volume parameters tables and reports will be automatically created and saved into the project folder after finishing the calculation (or if you stop the calculation manually).

      Click Batch Results to define the plots, parameter tables and reports to be created (see “Batch Results Processing” for details).

  5. Click Run.

Results

The calculation starts.

During the calculation you can monitor the obtained solution after the each iteration (see “Monitor” for details).

Note:

If the SOLIDWORKS is closed during the calculation the following message appears: Some calculations are currently running but solver cannot connect to the project. Please open the model. Otherwise the calculations will be stopped in 7 minutes. To prevent stopping all currently running calculations, open the geometry model.
