All records within SOLIDWORKS Manage are created inside of Objects. There are several Object Types and each has a different purpose and set of requirements.
A Record Object is used to hold records which do not require a Primary File. These records can still be used in BOMs and Processes, but do not require a physical file to exist.

A Document Object is used to hold records in exactly the same was as a Record Object, but records in this object must have a Primary File. When the record is first saved, the user is prompted to select a Primary File.
